Renting in New York

Renting an apartment in New York is akin to buying a place.  They want your every last detail of paperwork, including letters from your current landlord, your CPA if you have one (verifying your income although you are already providing your last federal income tax return).  I have done this several times since living in New York since 1999, but it never ceases to amaze me the hoops you must jump through.

I am looking for an apartment in the West Village.  I started off looking all over Manhattan, except for the Upper East Side and midtown.  I wound up concentrating on the village.  I absolutely love it down there.  Parts of it make me feel as if I am living somewhere much quieter than NYC.

So does everyone else love it down there.  Luckily, there are no high rises and the apartments are limited.  I have been running around like a chicken with my head cut off looking at places.  I do find it fun.  Except when they tell you you have to act NOW or else the apartment will be gone.  Which is not a lie.  I looked at a place that was not even listed and when I went to apply, it was already taken.  Hotcakes.  But I have looked at a lot of place and gotten a good feel for what I want and where I want to be.

We'll see what happens. . .it will be fun to move after the circus is over.
