The Quiet of Memorial Day Weekend

So, we are entering into the official weekend of summer.  The weekend that kicks off (for New Yorkers) the Hampton shares, weekends on Fire Island and yes, the Jersey Shore.  For some reason, I have never wanted to be one of the masses who squeezes in the bottlenecks onto the bridges and through the tunnels to be with the masses who are now in small beach towns.  Yet I live with the masses in New York City.  Go figure.  I guess when I want to escape, I really want to escape.

Anyway, I absolutely love New York on holiday weekends.  It is dead here today!  The streets are clear.  There was nobody in the gym.  I could have done cartwheels in the locker room.  I spent way too long lollygagging around there.  I got a seat right away in Starbucks to plunk down and write this post.  I didn't have to hover around, wait for someone to get up and then go in for the kill, completely embarrassing myself.  When that doesn't work, I'll walk from Starbucks to Starbucks and when I still can't find a seat on my third one, I just go home and write there (I live with the masses, alright).  My absolute favorite part about a holiday weekend in New York is that you can eat anywhere you want.  You can get into any restaurant, even those that have waiting lists a month long.  Unfortunately, that is a mere possibility these days, no a reality.  Restaurants of that caliber went out with the budget cuts when I quit.

So, I plan to enjoy New York this weekend.  I am headed to see a play at the Cherry Lane Theater this evening.  What a great little neighborhood.  You don't even know you are in New York.  I don't even have to sit in traffic.
